KIM HOUGHTON
Small Business Futures - Prospects for the next 5 years

Podcasts, blogs, YouTube and Ebay – is the internet really changing the operating environment for small businesses? Because on the other hand the ‘personal touch’ seems to be working better for small businesses than ever before as bigger competitors lose touch with customers, and customers themselves get more picky.

This presentation shares Kim's unique interpretation of today’s economic and demographic environments to highlight opportunities for small businesses over the next 5 years. The presentation draws on up-to-date economic data – especially consumer purchasing patterns, labour force and disposable income data. Kim looks at the data for the Southern Highlands as well as showing insights into national and international patterns – with a critical eye to find the trends and opportunities favouring small businesses.

CAMPBELL MACBEAN
Resiliency in Business: 3 Elements for Success

When thinking about what makes a business successful many people assume it is just about the tangibles – a great product, a great service, a profitable return on investment. This is certainly a desired outcome, but the effort required to get there can result in high stress, poor health and reduced quality of life. For a business to be successful and sustainable requires resilient people who know how to set appropriate business goals that align with their personal aspirations.

We will look at three aspects of personal resilience that can lead to running a successful business – curiosity, optimism and flexibility. The science of Positive Psychology is finally showing the link between these personal attributes and business success.

Brief

Campbell is an experienced Business Psychologist specialising in executive coaching and leadership development. He has worked extensively with small to medium sized businesses as well as with larger organisations in the commercial and public sector helping business owners and executives to be more effective by discovering their untapped inner resources. He works with individuals and groups to create sustainable change by applying the evidence based principles of Positive Psychology. www.executiveleadership.com.au

PRESENTATION OVERVIEW & REFERENCES

Highly resilient people are curious, optimistic & flexible

Curiosity
Al Siebert suggests the following ways to improve open-mindedness
  1. Practice active listening
  2. Write down on paper ‘What are important questions I should be asking’? eg
What is happening? What is not happening?
What are others doing? Why? What are others not doing? Why?
Where do I fit in to the situation?
How are others reacting? What are they feeling?
What are others not noticing?

Optimism
Optimism means an expectation about the future being better than how things are now.
Optimistic beliefs:
  1. the difficulty is temporary and can be changed
  2. it’s limited to this situation, most other aspects of my life are good
  3. it’s not my fault, brought on by external events but I’m not helpless
  4. I will find a way to cope with it
Flexibility
David McClelland found successful people set goals for themselves in a certain way – daydreaming about goals. Linking imagination with achieving practical goals in the following 4 steps:
  1. daydream about goals you feel motivated to achieve
  2. pick moderately challenging goals (zone of proximal development)
  3. use both optimistic and pessimistic thinking before committing to a goal
  4. seek advice from experienced people
