Gerda Foster is a Criminologist, who works in NSW prisons. She has worked with both male and female offenders, for over 3 decades. She speaks today, from a personal perspective, as a concerned member of our community.

Women from the BWN run complicated lifestyles so Self Care is a priority.  Gerda’s presentation is aimed at inspiring all human beings from birth to ageless, to PLAY…Bring Play and Playfulness  in your daily life!

“Discovering Professor Stuart Brown’s work with violent offenders confirmed my reality based experiences. Offender childhoods are often chaotic, and play deprived.  Childhood play experiences allow practice in decision making, exerting self control, solving problems, making friends, getting along with others as equals, and having the experience of joy that play enhances. Offenders mostly lack these qualities in spades.

This manifests in destructive calls for help such as substance abuse, violence and Domestic Violence. I currently facilitate programs addressing these issues both in prison and in the community, in Parole offices.

People like myself design and run programs to address these life skills, when the damage is already done. It’s extremely intense work in a usually futile attempt at undoing a lifetime of destructive habits, attitudes and behaviours This is a tremendous cost mentally, emotionally, physically, and financially, to the community

I offer stories about of life behind bars when moments of hope for a better life do happen”.

If time permits, and there is an open space at the venue for our wonderful group of women to move around, Gerda can also conclusion….

As a trained Laughter Yoga Leader, all present are invited to participate in a 10 minute Laughter Yoga experience.

(17 years ago Gerda gave a presentation to the BWN to launch a book she co-authored with her husband David,“ A Year of Slow Food”  She can bring some copies if people are interested in purchasing them as they are no longer available to purchase online.)
